Safety & Security

The people of Malaysia are very friendly and hospitable. Crime rate is still low and it's safe to travel almost all over the country. Always remember that you are visiting a foreign country with other customs and beliefs. For instance, most of the people are Muslims, which means your should put on more respectable dress code, but most importantly - you should not be underdressed. If you don't offend anyone with your lack of clothes you will probably feel uncomfortable with all the stares and whistles you will get. Adapt to the customs and don't stand out too much and you will feel a lot more at home.
The hostels and hotels usually have a safe deposit box where you can leave your valuables during your stay.
Year 2000, there were two kidnapping incidents on the east coast islands off Sabah. Both the Philippines and Malaysian governments have intensified border controls and are seriously keeping eye on security of the east coast islands. Travel to Semporna, Sipadan and nearby islands is now safe. Instead of just accommodations for tourists on the island, there is a military base and we have navies patrolling the islands. Malaysia has not been a target for any terrorist attack and is immensely a friendly, peaceful, welcoming and easy to get around country.
