Borneo Eco Tour's Sukau Rainforest Lodge has been named the winner of British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow Award 1997 for the Pacific Region which covers Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific islands. The award is given for its environmentally sound and responsible management, innovation and sustainable tourism initiatives which meet today's needs without threatening tomorrow's.
A total of 114 companies from 43 countries submitted for the five regional awards including the Pacific region. In each region, three projects are shortlisted as highly commended projects with one of them selected as the regional winner. In the Pacific region, the two highly commended projects were helping the elephant conservation project by Siam Safari Nature Tours, Phuket, Thailand and the environmental education project at Binna Burra Mountain Lodge, Queensland, Australia. The winner for the Pacific Region was Sukau Rainforest Lodge which was submitted by Borneo Eco Tours, Malaysia.
The four other regional winners were Birmingham Waterfront (UK), The restoration of Ardagh, Irish Republic (Europe), Phinda Resource Reserve (Southern) and Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Hawaii (Americas) which was also received the Global award. Other special awards include Vilamoura, Lusotur, Portugal (Europe Special), Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Hawaii (Longhaul Special), St Lucia Marine Park (IUCN/British Airways Special), Eco-Taj Environmental Initiative (BA Holidays Special Hotel Award).
The award ceremony was held on 25th February 1998 at Banqueting House, Whitehall in London at a banquet dinner for 300 top international tourism leaders. The awards were presented by the Chairman of British Airways, Sir Colin Marshall. The event was also recorded on ITV travel program, "Wish you were here???"
This is the first time a Malaysian company has won a regional award since British Airways run these awards in 1992. The judging panels including United Nations Environment Program, Smithsonian Institution, Royal Geographical Society, Federation of Tour Operators was chaired by Professor Dr. David Bellamy OBE. The award is run in association with British Tourist Authority (BTA), Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) and American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA).
