SUKAU RAINFOREST LODGE - CODE OF PRACTICE

Conservation
  1. Strengthen the conservation effort of the places visited.
  2. Support conservation programs and organizations working to preserve the environment.
  3. Use natural resources efficiently eg. water, energy.
Education
  1. Educate the local community, guides, managers and tourists on the environment management policies of the company.
  2. Educate guides, boatmen and tourists to never intentionally disturb wildlife habitats.
Environment
  1. Limit the capacity of boats using Menanggul River to 8 persons. Larger boats are encouraged to operate only on the main Kinabatangan River .
  2. Limit the maximum size of outboard engines to 15hp (preferably four stroke engines) when operating in Menanggul River to minimise noise and exhaust from engines. While viewing wildlifes, show due consideration to both wildlifes and other tourists in the other boats by using either electric motor or oar to maneuver your boat.
  3. Practise recycling and proper disposal of waste products to minimise negative impact to environment.
  4. Trek on designated trails to minimise damage to the habitat. Where appropriate, build raised plank-walks to minimize damage to trails with due consideration for existing elephant trails and trees.
Local Community
  1. Be sensitive to the needs of the local people, fishermen and other tour operators when using the river.
  2. Give priority to local people in employment opportunities whenever possible. Train and upgrade the skill of staff. For local community, provide contract jobs where appropriate or other forms of benefits including community and environment projects. Never give handouts and do charity in the long term but train them to be self reliant and to deserve what they get.
  3. Dress appropriately when visiting Sukau village or the local homes. Respect the sensitivities of local cultures.
  4. Buy locally produced goods to benefit the local community but do not buy goods made from endangered species.
  5. Where possible buy locally made boats to benefit the local people.
