ex-Sandakan (by boat)

DAY 01
  • Arrive Sandakan Airport by morning flight, transfer to jetty for approximately 1-hour boat ride by speedboat to Selingan Island.
  • Check into chalet.
  • Free at leisure to explore island, swim and snorkel.
  • After dinner, wait for signal from the Park Ranger before proceeding in small groups to watch green turtle lay eggs on the beach, transplanting of eggs to hatchery and release of baby turtles to the sea. This island is a park conservation area since 1977 and turtles come ashore to lay their eggs every night throughout the year.
  • Note: (November-February) Please be advised that our trip to Selingan Island involves boat journey via the Sulu Sea. In the event of inclement weather condition during or before the boat journey, the company will have the absolute discretion to cancel or postpone the trip if it is deemed that the journey will jeopardize the safety of our passengers. In the event of cancellation, a replacement tour will be offered. The company will not be liable for any compensation.

DAY 02
  • Return to Sandakan by boat. Transfer to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalks to witness the feeding of the orang utans at 1000hrs. Watch short video show of the rehabilitation process.
  • After lunch, transfer to Sandakan jetty for 2½ hours boat journey to the multi awards winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge along Sabah's longest river, Kinabatangan with opportunity to view birds and wildlife in virgin mangrove, wetland and rainforest habitats. After check-in and afternoon refreshment, we take a river cruise using electric motor in search of some of the 10 primate species. Sukau is home to Borneo pygmy elephants, orang utans, proboscis monkeys and all eight species of hornbill in Borneo.
  • Return for solar heated hot shower, candle light dinner overlooking the riverbank followed by slide show and interpretation by naturalist guide. Overnight at the newly renovated 20 rooms Sukau Rainforest Lodge, named by National Geographic Adventure magazine in 2009 as one of the top 50 jungle lodges in the world.

DAY 03
  • Wake up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills and hot Sabah tea.
  • A 0600hrs morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to Kelenanap oxbow lake to view more birds and wildlife.
  • After breakfast, proceed for an educational tour on the Hornbill Boardwalk located behind the lodge with our in-house naturalist. In the afternoon, we proceed for another river cruise for more wildlife.

Overnight at Sukau Rainforest Lodge

DAY 04
  • After breakfast, return to Sandakan by boat journey.
  • After lunch, transfer to airport.
  • For those on a late evening flight, we have a chance to visit Sandakan War Memorial and proceed to Rainforest Discovery Centre. Take a bird view of the centre from the canopy walk and hanging bridge before exploring the botanical garden, home to various species of flora.
