Personalised service We offer "Window" seat and provide life jacket for every guest during the river cruise, focus on safety which includes all boats insured, licensed (when required), and equipped with CB radio communication. All river boats (max. capacity of 8 persons) are hand crafted by the local fishermen and are equipped with clean four strokes outboard engines and silent electric engines. A thermo mug is provided for coffee or water on the river cruise. We guarantee a complementary night cruise if you don't see proboscis monkeys during the first afternoon cruise.
Exotic rainforest view
Our tour to Sukau traverses from Sandakan up the Kinabatangan River by speedboat which affords the visitor the best opportunity to view wildlife including wild orang utan, proboscis monkey, crocodiles, hornbills and occasionally the rare Borneo Pygmy elephants on their migration along the river bank. Romantic candle light dinner at Melapi Restaurant overlooking the river under the Borneo sky, one of the best views in Borneo.
Welcome Gifts Our guests (internet booking only) will receive a pack of our own special in-house welcome gifts including postcards, bookmarks and books worth MYR70.00 depending on the tours they take. For example A Souvenir of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo published by Albert Teo is F.O.C. for our guests who make tour purchase exceeding MYR500.00 per person in Sabah while Sabah, Land of the Sacred Mountain (excluding ex-Sukau tour) and Visitors Handbook on Lower Kinabatangan is given free to guests taking tours to Sukau Rainforest Lodge commencing in Sandakan.
Our facilities Built on stilts in traditional "Longhouse" style, this lodge will not be subjected to annual flooding. SRL also has a reference library. We provide satellite phone and internet connection for those who need to stay in touch. A 1500ft Hornbill Boardwalk at the back of the lodge is the longest covered boardwalk in Borneo. It includes two elephant passes and is built along the elephant migration route. Facilities for guests with disabilities and a conference hall 'Gomantong Hall' are the new features here.
Our environmental standards
We are a low impact Eco-Lodge with our own “green policies” and Code of Practice. These include offering river cruises in Sukau with locally handcrafted wooden boats (max. 8 passengers) built with recycled logs using "silent" electric motor for close up wildlife viewing, thus minimizing the negative impact of toxic fumes on both wildlife and in-boat passengers. Guestrooms are designed using cross air ventilation and fan for cooling and shower water in all attached bathroom is harvested from rainwater and solar heated. Oil lamps and recycled cooking oil are being used for lighting. Guests are also given the opportunity to contribute to conservation through Voluntary Conservation Levy VCL as well as participate in tree planting (KWICORP). http://www.sukau.com/kwicorp.php
Benefits to local community For every international guest who stays with us, we donate RM4 per adult to non-profit Borneo Ecotourism Solutions and Technologies (BEST) Society for our community and conservation projects. (Borneo Eco Tours also contributes RM8 per guest). We set this fund aside irrespective of whether we make profit or not. Between 1996-2010, we spent approximately MYR503,200.00 on various projects. http://www.sukau.com/news.php?cat=5
Benefits to environment
We dedicate our rooms to scientists and others who have contributed to the environment and local community. We buy tree seedlings from the local community and encourage our guests to rehabilitate the second riverine site we have adopted. http://borneoecotours.com/press.php?pid=49
