I hope I have enough space for all the wonderful things I have to say about this jungle gem. I stayed longer than the average stay to try to capture some shots of orang-utans in the wild and I wasn't disappointed thanks to my excellent guide Jamil. As a photographer I had different priorities to 'regular' tourists and since the lodge was not full during my stay I was lucky enough to have Jamil all to myself and he was happy to accommodate my requests i.e. to spend three days sitting under the same tree while a large male orang-utan feasted on its fruits. The lodge is beautiful and relaxing and I cannot say enough about the wonderful staff. I have never met people like them. They actually felt like family by the end and I almost cried the day I had to leave. They could not do enough for me. I made my own batik painting and attended a talk on orang-utans which was really interesting and informative. The boardwalk (1500 feet of it) at the back of the lodge allows you to get right into the heart of the jungle but in relative comfort (invaluable to me as I use a crutch and could not really have had that experience otherwise). The jungle was an experience I'll never forget - I got my orang-utan shots along with pictures of eagles, hornbills, proboscis monkeys, a lemur, pygmy squirrels, huge lizard, snakes, geckos, stunning butterflies, about three other types of monkeys whose names I can't remember, a crocodile, a chameleon, owls, kingfishers, stunning photos of egrets and on my very last river cruise I was treated to a small herd of pygmy elephants on the banks of the river. If you appreciate wildlife or birds this is an absolute must. And definitely do the night cruise. It's really amazing when they stop the engine and you just float in total silence and darkness on a clear night with millions of stars overhead. And did I mention the night sounds of the jungle - like a lullaby.I feel so refreshed and relaxed after my stay and despite the long ardous journey I will definitely be coming back here again.I'm still on the road but will upload photos when I get home. Big thanks to Noah, Joe and Flo for donning traditional costumes and patiently working with me to capture their portraits in traditional dress.

Side trip to Gomantong. The guides were great- especially Joy - we would have missed a lot of animals otherwise. In house the food and service were first class

This is a great birding and wildlife location. Carry your binoculars and your camera at all times! Take as many of the boat excursions as you can fit in, with at least one morning and one night cruise. The boardwalk is awesome, and worthy of many walks, at all times of day or night. Walk out on the platforms and look up! We were within 10 meters of a mother and child Orang Utan. Flying lizards, flying lemurs, wild cats, and all sorts of insects. We got chased off by macaques a few times 8 ).Nicely maintained rustic lodge with modern room amenities. Dip pool is nice and cool. The service was great. The staff was friendly. The food was good and plentiful. The AC runs during the afternoon, if you need a nap, or need to dry things. Open the window vents in the back of the room, to allow it to cool faster at night (there are screens). Store has bug spray. Be prepared for rain. Have comfortable shoes, but be prepared to sit a lot (boat rides).Joh (Joy), our guide was remarkably adept at spotting all sorts of wildlife (birds, primates, reptiles, etc...) while moving at fairly high speed. You start to get the hang of it, after a few days.Saw 6 of the 8 local hornbills, numerous raptors, several kingfishers, and a wide variety of primates and other fauna. We had a wonderful stay.

What an amazing and wonderful experience. Thank you Sukau Rainforest Lodge for giving us such an enjoyable stay. Everything was fantastic - accommodation, boat cruise, food, staff. I want to mention Fernando A, Suhailee , Jackie and Noah for their friendly and approachable manner. I would definitely recommend this lodge to anybody wanting to visit the Kinabatangan river.

Absolutely incredible. Have written a short blog post on our time at Sukau lodge:

We took the 2 night, 3 day tour. The first 2 days were well organized; our guide Jamil was friendly and knowledgeable; service was great from all other staff too; add comfortable rooms, good food, good wildlife sightings and an excellent all round ambience and you have a very enjoyable package.

However, the 3rd day was not so well planned. After the river transfer we were taken for lunch very early at just after 11.30 am. The visit to Sandakan Memorial Park was most worthwhile but we then had to drive to the airport to drop off party members in the early afternoon. We were specifically asked at the time of booking to arrange our onward flight after 6pm, presumably to make a full day of activity possible, so having done this it was frustrating that we had to make an early visit to the airport. We then returned to the Sepilok Nature Reserve in mid-afternoon, despite it being confirmed by our guide that any sightings of wildlife at this time of the day were very unlikely, which proved correct. Despite it being included in our itinerary we did not see the Botanical Garden.

It would have seemed more logical if we could have been deposited at the Garden, or even the noteworthy Agnes Keith House, whilst others were delivered to the airport. Unfortunately, after an excellent 2 days, day 3 felt wasted and was rather unsatisfactory.

I have tried to write a balanced review, which reflects our feelings, and hope you will find the negative observations constructive in your future planning.

Dear Oviera,

I just wanted to say a Big Thank You for your help in organising our trip, it was fantastic! Accommodation at the lodges was great, the staff very helpful and the guides were excellent. Everything went smoothly and we couldn't have wished for a better trip (we managed to see orang utans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, crocodiles, hornbills and a slow loris which was exceptional).

Best wishes, Lauren

We wanted to write to you to thank you for such a wonderful stay at the lodge recently. We had a very special and memorable time, which in no small part was due to all the amazing staff who looked after us so well and our superb guides Jamil and Suhailie who helped us to see so much magical wildlife. We were particularly grateful to everyone for making Mike's birthday so special with the surprise cake you had arranged for him! Once again, many thanks for making our stay so special and we would be grateful if you could pass on our heart felt thanks to everyone! Kind regards,Mike and Esther Darby
