Birding In Borneo

Day 1: Kota Kinabalu - Tambunan - Kundasang

Our adventure begins as we pick you up from Kota Kinabalu Airport or the hotel you’re staying in Kota Kinabalu town, and then we will depart to the Tambunan area for your first birding journey in Borneo. Later in the afternoon we will make our way to the foothills of the majestic Mt. Kinabalu. It will take a 1-hour drive from Tambunan to Kundasang. Upon arrival, we will proceed with check-in and stay the night in the Kundasang area.

Day 2: Kinabalu Park

Gear up early in the morning as we will spend a full day of exciting bird watching around the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinabalu Park which are home to unique species of birds in Borneo. Experienced guides will bring you to explore the various trails and avoid the crowds. After a fun long day of birding, we will head back to the hotel to rest.

Day 3: Kinabalu Park

Another full day to spend around Kinabalu Park for your birding adventure. Experienced guides will bring you to explore different trails in hopes for more species of birds sightings and avoid the crowds. Spend another night at the Kundasang area after a full exciting day of birding.

Day 4: Kinabalu Park

Last day and last chance to explore the birds and wildlife at the Kinabalu Park! Spend your final night here at Kundasang before moving on to our next location tomorrow.

Day 5: Poring - Sepilok

Rise and shine as we begin our journey early to Poring for bird watching in that area. Then we will start our drive to Sepilok that will approximately take 4 hours to the east coast. After settling in at Sepilok, there will be a night walk in the evening at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) in hoping to witness nocturnal wildlife.

Day 6: Rainforest Discovery Centre

A new day to enjoy a full day with bird watching in the Rainforest Discovery Centre as our experienced guide will help you along the way. Relax and be at ease as we will spend the night at Sepilok Nature Resort.

Day 7: Sukau Rainforest Lodge

An early bird watching in the morning. Then, we will have our lunch before transferring to Sandakan jetty for 2.5 hours boat journey to the multi-award winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge along Sabah’s longest river, the Kinabatangan river which is coined as the Amazon of Malaysia. Along this river journey, you will have the opportunity to have your first view of birds and wildlife there. After settling in at the lodge, there will be an afternoon cruise for your first bird-watching adventure at Sukau Rainforest Lodge. After dinner, proceed for a night river cruise to get up close and observe sleeping birds nesting on the lower branches for a great photo opportunity.

Day 8: Sukau Rainforest Lodge

A new day at Sukau Rainforest lodge and there’s so much to explore! Gear up for morning and afternoon river cruises for your bird-watching adventure. Take this chance to witness the Borneo Big 5, the Proboscis Monkey, the Pygmy Elephant, Orang Utan, Crocodiles and the stunning Rhinoceros Hornbill. After dinner, proceed for another night cruise to witness the wildlife in the dark.

Day 9: Sukau Rainforest Lodge

Get ready for another morning river cruise for bird watching. Later, we will proceed with a late afternoon river cruise in hopes to witness various species of birds or wildlife that Borneo could offer. Grab this chance to explore more as this is your last day at Sukau Rainforest Lodge.

Day 10: Sukau - Lahad Datu - Utan Rainforest Lodge

After breakfast, proceed 2 hours overland to Lahad Datu before travelling another 2.5 hours drive on a gravel road to Utan Rainforest Lodge another haven for bird watching enthusiasts.

Day 11: Utan Rainforest Lodge

Another exciting full day of bird watching in Sungai Kapur Forest Reserve. Overnight at Utan Rainforest Lodge.

Day 12: Utan Rainforest Lodge - Lahad Datu - Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Check out early and proceed 2.5 hours drive back to Lahad Datu where we'll stopover for registration. Then continue to drive 83km to Borneo Rainforest Lodge which is surrounded by pristine virgin rainforests. Continue your bird-watching escapade. More than 300 species of birds have been recorded in Danum Valley.

Day 13: Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Gear up and be ready for a full day of birding adventure at the area of Borneo Rainforest Lodge. Be prepared as you will be in awe of the abundance of wildlife in this area. After a fun day with the wildlife kick back and relax in Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Day 14: Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Last chance to enjoy your full day of bird watching in the area in Borneo Rainforest Lodge. Final night to explore the facilities in Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Day 15: Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Lahad Datu - Kota Kinabalu

Free at leisure until check-out. Be ready to depart back to Lahad Datu. Take the late afternoon flight back to Kota Kinabalu.

Day 16: Departure

It’s time to say goodbye and be ready for your transfer to Kota Kinabalu Airport for your departure flight.
